Horse Statue

The story of one of the last great chiefs of the Oglala Sioux, and of a sculptor's determination to carve a huge statue of the fearless warrior in the Black Hills of South Dakota, is told. Color illustrations.

On May 2, 1519, at the Clos Luce in Amboise, Leonardo da Vinci is dying. He no longer cares about art or science. Berry's stupendous novel is a fitting response to the close of a century obsessed with the "end of history". This book is a masterpiece of a kind rarely dared in the contemporary novel.

Bucephalus - Bucephalus (meaning ox-head) was Alexander the Great's horse and arguably the most famous horse in history. One of the horses in the statue group in the Piazza del Quirinale in Rome is named after him.

Kala Ghoda - Kala Ghoda is a precinct or district in South Bombay, India. The name means Black Horse, a reference to a black stone statue of King Edward VII (as the then Prince of Wales) mounted on a horse.

Such statues were frequently (but not exclusively) made out of military leaders of note, and such statesmen who wished to symbolically emphasize an active and strong leadership role.
